Keeping New Mothers Alive
In Haiti and Rwanda, Reducing Tragedy in Childbirth:
SPECIAL Mother’s Day Event

Don’t just give your mother a gift like chocolates or flowers that only last a week – plant a citrus tree in her honor and honor Mother Earth at the same time! Haiti is the most deforested country in our hemisphere and each tree can make a difference. Plant a tree for a mother in your life for $20 and we will send a beautiful mother’s day card, describing your gift, to arrive in time for May 11th. For $35 you can give the gift of a citrus tree to one of the mothers of Cyvadier, Haiti as well.
What can I do in the face of food riots in Haiti? Our most recent appeal for funding focuses on the issue of hunger and sustainable solutions.
Dear friends,
April 9, 2008, 11:23 am
The whole country is waiting for President Preval to speak. We are in the fourth day of food riots and he has not said anything yet. We have seats on a chartered flight to Port-au-Prince, but so far the pilot hasn’t been able to get to the airport there. In the airport here they are saying “peyi a firme”, the country is closed. When we tried to go to the airport in Jacmel we were frankly shocked to see a barricade just below the Jaclef Hotel on the road to town. Joe went back on his bike later and there were five barricades between here and Morne Nicholas.
When we got back, Joe started the generator so I could go online to see what is happening. I quickly learned several disturbing things:

When the leadership committe of the Youth for the Development of Cyvadier (JDS) began discussing Earth Day last week, none of the young people had ever heard of the celebration before. We struggled to find the right translation and settled on "Selebrasyon de Tè", or Celebration of the Earth to translate literally. The group immediately wanted to plan an event to coincide with the international day to celebrate our planet.
