KONPAY's Emergency Earthquake Response

Though small in size, KONPAY leveraged its vast network of supporters and colleagues to enact a swift, strategic and effective response, literally moments after we heard the news of Haiti's January 12th earthquake. KONPAY made a seemingly impossible task not only possible but a reality.

Fundraising: KONPAY raised, responsibly allocated and disbursed more than $200,000 in direct assistance to the Haitian people.

Aid Logistics & Fundraising: Within one week of the quake, KONPAY coordinated desperately needed medical and food aid to the Jacmel-Cyvadier communities, making KONPAY one of the first organizations to successfully direct aid to this devastated community.

  • Secured transportation lines into Jacmel by land, sea and air.  Five (5) Dominican Republic Navy boats transported supplies and medical teams directly to Jacmel.
  • Provided on-the-ground support to the first medical-surgical team from the Community Coalition for Haiti, followed by longer-term medical teams from Delaware who (1) established two functioning field operating rooms with anesthesia and (2) provided medical care for more than 2000 injured persons.
  • Organized and executed an orderly distribution system of several tons of food, the majority of which was purchased in local markets.  This provided food aid to more than 1000 families and supported the local economy.
  • Distributed hundreds of water filters, provided by AquaPUR, in Cyvadier and surrounding towns.

Transitional Shelters/Housing: Through the Sydney, Australia based Exodus Foundation's generous financial support and donation of two 40' containers of emergency relief supplies, including a significant number of shelter materials, KONPAY was able to repair damaged homes or build transitional shelter for families in the Jacmel-Cyvadier communities.

Building Assessments: KONPAY hosted an AIDG -Appropriate Infrastructure Development Group - training in structural safety assessment that was presented to 25 Haitian engineers.  KONPAY also worked with AIDG to bring structural engineers to the Jacmel-Cyvadier communities to visit buildings and conduct safety assessments.

Community Assessments: KONPAY's Haiti team, comprised of Joe Duplan, Guypson Catalis and Agronomist Cheler Pierre, formed a core animation team, met with community leaders and performed needs assessments in a dozen tent communities and temporary settlements in the following areas:

  • Rue St. Anne, Jacmel
  • Oban, between Cyvadier and Raymond les Bains
  • Anba Zoranje
  • Zoranje
  • Cap Lamandou
  • Magloire Ambroise
  • Cap Rouge
